Winter tire laws 2026: Quebec dates, BC signed highways and tread rules, Ontario insurance discounts and US chain controls, with official sources.
Short answer: Winter tire laws in 2026 depend on where you drive. Quebec requires winter tires with the mountain snowflake symbol on registered vehicles from December 1 to March 15. British Columbia requires winter tires or chains on most signed highways from October 1 to April 30. In the US, rules are set state by state.
BC's winter tire season started on October 1 and Quebec's deadline is about a month away, which is why so many drivers are searching for winter tire laws right now. Below are the 2026 rules for Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario, a US example from Washington State, and a simple checklist to make sure your tires actually count as winter tires. Every rule links to the official government page, so you can check the latest wording before you book your tire change.
When are winter tires mandatory in Quebec?
In Quebec, winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15 inclusive. The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) says the rule covers all motorized road vehicles registered in Quebec, other than heavy vehicles, tool vehicles and farm machinery.
The SAAQ adds that the requirement also applies to rental passenger vehicles in Quebec, as well as mopeds, motorized scooters and motorcycles. The details that catch people out:
• The symbol matters. Since December 15, 2014, only tires that carry the official pictogram (a mountain with a snowflake) and studded tires count as winter tires under Quebec's Highway Safety Code. An "M+S" marking on its own does not meet the Quebec standard.
• Studs and chains have their own window. The SAAQ allows studded tires and chains between October 15 and May 1 inclusive for passenger vehicles, taxis and light commercial vehicles.
• Four tires, not two. The SAAQ says your vehicle must be equipped with four winter tires that meet established standards and are in good condition.
The SAAQ page also lists a few exceptions, so check it if you have a new, leased or temporarily registered vehicle.
What are the winter tire rules in British Columbia?
British Columbia does not have a province-wide rule for every road. Instead, the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit says winter tires or chains are required on most routes from October 1 to April 30, and on select highways outside mountain passes and high snowfall areas the requirement ends March 31.
What counts as a legal winter tire in BC is different from Quebec:
• The tire must have at least 3.5 mm of tread depth (about 4/32 of an inch).
• It must be marked either "M+S" (the minimum legal requirement) or with the 3-peaked mountain snowflake symbol. The province recommends the mountain snowflake for better traction on snow and ice.
• Summer tires are not permitted on designated routes during the winter months, and chains on summer tires are not an acceptable substitute.
Enforcement is real. According to the BC government, the RCMP, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and other police agencies can stop you from continuing and issue a $121 fine when a passenger vehicle is not equipped with winter tires where they are required.
Do other provinces require winter tires?
Quebec has a general seasonal mandate and BC applies its rules on signed highways. Elsewhere, check your provincial rules, and in Ontario there is a financial reason to switch.
The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) says all insurance companies must offer a discount if you install winter tires on your vehicle. Ask your insurer how to qualify before your tires go on. In other provinces and territories, check your provincial transportation ministry for local rules on specific highways.
What are the winter tire and chain rules in the US?
There is no national winter tire law in the US, so the rules come from each state and from the signs on the road. Washington State is a good example of how this works for drivers heading into the mountains this season.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says studded tires are legal in Washington only from November 1 through March 31, and that this applies to all vehicles in the state, even those coming from other states. WSDOT also points out that studded tires do not count as chains: when a road is posted for chains, drivers still need to install chains over studded tires to continue. If you live in or travel to another snowy state, check its transportation department before a trip.
How do you check if your tires are legal for winter?
Look at the sidewall and measure the tread. Those two checks answer most of the legal questions in Quebec and BC.
• Find the symbol. A mountain with a snowflake is accepted in both Quebec and BC. "M+S" alone works in BC but not in Quebec.
• Measure the tread. BC requires at least 3.5 mm. A simple tread depth gauge costs little and gives a clear answer.
• Check the pressure after the swap. Cold air lowers tire pressure, so a set that was correct in the shop can be low a week later. Our guide to tire pressure in cold weather explains how often to check.
If you would rather not kneel in the slush with a gauge, the Vigiroad plug-in tire pressure monitor with 4 sensors ($44.99 USD / $59.99 CAD) uses four valve-cap sensors to show each tire's pressure and temperature on a 12V display, and it beeps when a tire loses air. It ships from our partner warehouse to both the US and Canada.
How can you prepare your car before the deadline?
Book your tire change early, then use the same visit to get the rest of the car ready for winter, so a surprise snowfall does not catch you on summer tires.
• Ask the shop to check the tread depth and the manufacturing date of your winter set before it goes on.
• Keep a scraper, a brush and washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures in the car.
• Review how to brake and steer on slippery roads with our guide on how to drive on snow and ice.
• Record your drives. Winter fender benders often come down to who slid into whom. The Vigiroad 2K front and rear dash cam with WiFi (from $89.99 USD / $119.99 CAD) records the road ahead in 2K and behind in 1080p with loop recording, and ships to the US and Canada with tracking.
Frequently asked questions
When do I need winter tires in Quebec in 2026?
From December 1, 2026 to March 15, 2027 inclusive, according to the SAAQ. The tires must carry the mountain snowflake pictogram or be studded tires.
Are M+S tires legal as winter tires?
In British Columbia, yes: M+S is the minimum legal marking, with at least 3.5 mm of tread. In Quebec, no: only tires with the mountain snowflake pictogram and studded tires count.
Do studded tires replace chains in Washington State?
No. WSDOT says studded tires do not count as chains, so you must still install chains on roads posted for chains. Studded tires are only legal there from November 1 through March 31.
