Recording passengers: the rule to know

In several states, including California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington, every passenger must agree to audio recording. Post a visible notice in the car, such as “This vehicle records audio and video,” or turn audio off. Video alone is usually enough in a dispute.

General information, not legal advice. Check the law in your state or province.

Driver questions

Can I use a dash cam while driving for Uber or Lyft?

Yes. Uber and Lyft both let drivers use a dash cam, and both offer an optional dash cam registration in the Driver app so riders are told the ride may be recorded. Follow the recording rules where you drive.

Do my passengers have to agree to be recorded?

For audio, several US states require every person in the conversation to agree, including California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington. Post a visible notice in the car or turn audio off. In Canada, check the privacy rules of your province. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I post a ride video online?

No. Uber and Lyft do not allow drivers to publicly post or stream a rider’s image. Share a clip only with the platform, your insurer or the police when you need to.

What memory card does the 3-channel dash cam need?

A microSD card of up to 32 GB. The card is not included.

Why a 3-channel dash cam for rideshare?

It records the road ahead, the cabin and the rear at the same time, so a passenger complaint, a hit-and-run and an insurance question are all on one recording.
